Will Portray John West,
President of the University
of North Dakota
1. Elementary students are, I suspect, unlikely to express much interest in Dr. West. However, should they want, I could talk in general terms about what a university is and what a university president’s job is.
2. Middle school students, depending on what coursework they have had, might be interested in hearing about what the mission of a university is, what the parts of the university are, and how UND came to be located in Grand Forks.
3. Senior high students could be presented with information on how Dr. West and UND were affected by the Great Depression and by World War II, and how the university changed during that period of time. They could also learn about how universities came to be formed (starting a thousand years ago in Europe) and how those historical elements are still with us.
