The Storyteller will address the following social studies standards in her presentation:
Grade 4 Standards
4.1.2 Use map scales to locate physical features and estimate distance on a map. Children could locate Grand Forks County, their town, and relate number of schools in county that M. Beatrice supervised as County Superintendent of Schools.
4.5.4 Explain how the physical environment (e.g. rainfall, climate, natural hazards) affects human activityin North Dakota. Discuss why the school year averaged 60 days.
4.6.1. Explain how background and history influence people’s actions. Relate M. Beatrice’s love of education and why she was so successful in bringing UND courses to the people of North Dakota.
4.6.2 Explain the contributions of various ethnic groups (immigrants) to the history of North Dakota. Discuss the number of immigrants and children of immigrants who were in North Dakota and how M. Beatrice helped them assimilate to the American culture.
Middle School Standards
8.2.5 Explain how reform efforts led to major changes in society (women’s movement and eduation). Relate how M. Beatrice’s, competence, determination, and love of the people of North Dakota overcame gender prejudice.
8.2.11 Explain the significance of key event and people in the North Dakota history (e.g. settlement and homesteading). Relate how country schools in the county brought people together.
Explain the connections between the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. Relate how M. Beatrice worked through the County Commissioners and State Legislature to acquire a school nurse for the county.
Secondary School Standards
9‑12.2.2 Evaluate the impact of various factors that led to the transformation of the nation (e.g. immigration and mechanization of agriculture). Relate how M. Beatrice used education to help immigrants assimilate to American culture.
9‑12.4.6 Evaluate the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and civic participation. Relate how M. Beatrice worked through country commissioners and the state legislature to acquire a school nurse for Grand Forks County.
9‑12.6.1 Explain how group and cultural influences contribute to human development, identity, and behavior. (education) Explain how she felt about education and how that determined the course of her life.
